This project aimed to redesign the dust cover and three novel chapters. This project was completed for my Typography I class.
The Bell Jar is a semi-autobiographical novel that explores gender roles and mental illness during the 1950s. The book’s main character, Esther Greenwood, is a talented writer and witty young woman that feels constricted by society's expectations of women. Throughout the novel, Esther falls further into her mental illness. The Bell Jar also explores aspects of rebirth and recovery. In one particularly impactful passage, Esther compares her opportunities and choices to figs on a tree, which she visualizes as falling off and dying due to indecision.
The dust jacket uses figs throughout to keep a consistent theme. It evokes 1950s art with its layered solid, geometric shapes.
